Why I Regret Changing My Hair Routine Too Fast
Until a couple of years ago, I washed my hair every. single. day.
It was just part of the routine—wake up, shower, shampoo, done.
Then one day, someone (okay, my wife, but don’t tell her I told you 👀) casually mentioned:
“You know that’s bad for your hair, right?”
So, I reduced it to 2–3 times a week. No questions asked.
Big mistake.
What Happened When I Stopped Washing Daily
- My scalp got flaky
- My hair turned dry
- I started getting dandruff
- I started to feel like I was doing something wrong
Turns out, I was.
See, I have oily hair, I work out 4–5 times a week, and I live in Dubai (hot & humid almost all year).
That plays a big role in how often you should wash your hair.
The Real Lesson in Hair Care
A lot of us tend to listen to friends and family who we assume know more about haircare than we do.
But here’s the truth:
You need to do your own research.
Find what works for you. And when it works? Stick with it.
The best way to figure that out is through trial and error.
I experimented for a couple of months before I found a routine that actually made my hair feel better.
How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?
It depends on:
- Your hair type
- Your lifestyle
- How much you sweat
- Your environment (like, say, a humid coastal city 🥵)
We made a cheat sheet to help:
Hair Type |
Wash Frequency |
Oily or Fine Hair | 4 to 5 times a week |
Dry or Curly Hair | 1 to 2 times a week |
Textured Hair | Once a week |
If you sweat or style your hair | Add a rinse or conditioner only wash as required. |
In regions like the UAE, where the air is hot, sticky, and humid, most of us end up washing our hair more often just to feel clean.
But that extra washing exposes you to something you might not be thinking about…
Protecting Hair from Water Damage
When you wash your hair more often, you’re also increasing your exposure to chlorine and other chemicals in the water.
Over time, that:
- Dries out your hair and scalp
- Strips away natural oils
- Makes your strands more prone to breakage and frizz
Even if you’re using the right shampoo or conditioner, the water itself might be undoing all that care.
